Chennai, December 8, 2025 – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is nearing completion of an ambitious eco-park project at Raman Thangal Lake in Sholinganallur. Funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds amounting to ₹96.12 lakh from the Environmentalist Foundation of India, the project is currently 90% complete and aims to transform the 41.7-acre lake into a biodiversity hotspot.
Key features of the project include the removal of invasive water hyacinth and terrestrial weed species, the installation of a sluice gate to improve flood mitigation, and the creation of diverse green spaces. These spaces will include a butterfly garden, a flower garden, and a bamboo garden, all designed to attract a wider variety of wildlife.
Furthermore, a “fruit garden” is being developed on a small island within the lake, known locally as “bird island,” with the goal of attracting and supporting local bird populations.
GCC officials state that the remaining work is expected to be completed shortly, promising a significant improvement to the ecological health and aesthetic appeal of the Raman Thangal Lake area. This project underscores the city’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable urban development.
