New Delhi, India – The release of the upcoming spy thriller “Dhurandhar,” starring Ranveer Singh, has ignited controversy amid speculation that the film’s protagonist draws heavily from the life of late Major Mohit Sharma, a decorated Indian Army Special Forces officer awarded the Ashoka Chakra for his ultimate sacrifice.
Major Sharma, known for his bravery and covert operations, was killed in action in Kashmir in 2009. He had previously infiltrated a militant group in 2004, using the alias “Iftikhar Bhatt,” eliminating key terrorists and earning the Sena Medal.
The film, directed by Aditya Dhar, features Singh as Jaskirat Singh Rangi, an Indian intelligence operative with a troubled past who goes undercover in Karachi to target a terrorist network. The rugged appearance of Singh’s character and the premise of the infiltration mission have led many to draw parallels between Rangi and Major Sharma.
Fueling the controversy, Major Sharma’s family reportedly objected to the film’s release, alleging exploitation of his life without permission. They sought a court order for a private screening before the film’s public release.
Director Aditya Dhar has vehemently denied any connection to Major Sharma’s life, insisting “Dhurandhar” is a work of pure fiction.
Following a direction from the Delhi High Court, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) re-examined the movie and concluded that “Dhurandhar” bears no direct or indirect resemblance to Major Sharma’s life. The film was subsequently granted an adult certificate.
Despite the denials and certification, the similarities have continued to be discussed.
Regardless of any potential influence, Major Mohit Sharma’s legacy as a brave and dedicated soldier remains. His willingness to undertake dangerous covert operations, prioritize intelligence gathering, and ultimately sacrifice his life for his comrades has cemented his place as an Indian hero.
