MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to miss close to four weeks with a strained right calf, casting a shadow over the team’s immediate future and raising questions about his eligibility for end-of-season awards. The injury occurred just minutes into Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Pistons, forcing the two-time MVP to be helped off the court.
While the initial diagnosis suggested a two-to-four week recovery period, Bucks coach Doc Rivers emphasized the importance of not rushing Antetokounmpo back, citing the risk of re-injury. “I feel like we should learn is with calves – make sure they’re healthy,” Rivers said. “So that may take longer than we want. That even may make Giannis frustrated over it, but we just got to try to get that right.”
This marks the second time this season the Bucks will be without Antetokounmpo, who previously missed four games with an adductor injury, during which the team went 0-4. Rivers expressed optimism that the team is better equipped to handle his absence this time around, highlighting point guard Kevin Porter Jr.’s health. However, he acknowledged the challenge of replacing Antetokounmpo’s scoring, rebounding, and playmaking ability, particularly his contribution to the Bucks’ league-leading three-point shooting.
The extended absence could also jeopardize Antetokounmpo’s chances of being eligible for end-of-season awards, as NBA rules require players to participate in at least 65 regular-season games.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst joined “Get Up” to discuss how the injury might impact future trade discussions, given the risk it could pose to Milwaukee’s performance and Antetokounmpo’s health long-term.
The Bucks, currently with a 9-8 record when Antetokounmpo plays and a 1-5 record when he’s sidelined, face a crucial stretch of 11 games remaining in 2025.
