Cyclone Ditwah Devastates Sri Lanka, Leaving Hundreds Dead and Missing; India Leads Relief Efforts
Colombo, Sri Lanka – December 7, 2025 – Cyclone Ditwah has unleashed Sri Lanka’s worst natural disaster in over two decades, causing widespread devastation across the island nation. As of Saturday evening, authorities report 611 confirmed deaths and at least 213 people missing following torrential rains, floods, and landslides.
The cyclone, which struck last week, severely impacted 22 of Sri Lanka’s 25 districts. A United Nations-backed “Rapid Needs Assessment” highlights the high risk of food insecurity, extensive crop damage, and the destruction of vital infrastructure, including railway lines, roads, buildings, and communication networks. Primary healthcare centers and hundreds of schools have also suffered damage.
The central and southern hill country districts of Kandy, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle, and Matale have reported the highest fatalities. These areas are home to many Malaiyaha Tamil estate workers, one of Sri Lanka’s most vulnerable communities.
India has emerged as the first responder, swiftly deploying military personnel, including the National Disaster Response Force, to aid Sri Lankan authorities in rescue operations across the country, even in the most challenging areas. Indian agencies are establishing field hospitals and assisting in the construction of Bailey bridges to restore road access.
While numerous countries are offering financial assistance and relief supplies, Sri Lanka faces a long and difficult recovery as communities work to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
