New Delhi – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar today reiterated India’s commitment to an independent foreign policy, emphasizing the enduring strength of its relationship with Russia while navigating complex trade negotiations with the United States.
Speaking at a media summit, Mr. Jaishankar highlighted President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit as a catalyst for bolstering economic ties between India and Russia. He dismissed suggestions that this partnership would jeopardize trade talks with the U.S., stating that India maintains “strategic autonomy” in its international relations. “For any country to expect to have a veto or a say in how we develop our relations with others is not a reasonable proposition,” Jaishankar asserted.
He acknowledged the U.S.’s focus on trade but emphasized India’s commitment to defending its national interests in any agreement. “Diplomacy… is about defending our national interests,” he stated, prioritizing the well-being of Indian workers, farmers, and businesses in trade negotiations.
