Starc Surpasses Akram, Crowned New King of Left-Arm Pace
Brisbane, Australia – December 5, 2024 – Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has officially surpassed Pakistan legend Wasim Akram as the highest wicket-taking left-arm pacer in Test cricket. The milestone was achieved during a dominant opening day of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba, where Starc bagged an impressive 6/71 against England, taking him past Akram’s previous record of 414 wickets.
Akram, quick to acknowledge Starc’s achievement, took to social media to congratulate the Australian. “Super Starc! Proud of you, mate,” Akram wrote on X. “Your incredible hard work sets you apart, and it was only a matter of time before you crossed my tally of wickets. I am pleased to give this to you! Go well, and keep soaring to new heights in your stellar career.”
Despite the accolades, Starc, who now boasts 418 Test wickets, remained humble. Speaking to the media after the day’s play, he insisted that Akram remains “a far better bowler” and “the pinnacle of left-armers.”
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting recently praised Starc’s legacy and lasting impact on the game, noting his recent milestone of 100 Tests and 400 Test wickets against the West Indies.
Starc currently sits fourth on Australia’s all-time list of Test wicket-takers, behind Shane Warne (708), Glenn McGrath (563), and Nathan Lyon (562).
The second Ashes Test continues at the Gabba, with England ending day one at 325/9. The series schedule is:

- Second Test: Gabba, December 4-8
