Maxey’s Clutch Block Seals Thrilling 76ers Victory Over Warriors
PHILADELPHIA, PA – In a game that had everything, the Philadelphia 76ers eked out a nail-biting 99-98 victory over the Golden State Warriors Thursday night, thanks to a sensational, game-saving block by All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey. With just seconds remaining and the Warriors poised to complete a stunning comeback, Maxey sprinted the length of the court to swat away a potential game-winning layup attempt by former teammate De’Anthony Melton as time expired.
“I just wanted to make a play and try to help us win that game,” Maxey said after the thrilling win.
The Sixers, playing at home, appeared to be in control for much of the night, building a commanding 24-point lead. However, the Warriors, despite being without key players Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler III, and Draymond Green (who exited the game early due to injury), mounted a furious rally in the fourth quarter.
Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe provided a crucial offensive rebound and put-back with just 0.9 seconds left to put the Sixers up 99-98, but a costly turnover by Buddy Hield gave Melton a clear path to the basket, setting the stage for Maxey’s heroics.
“The block was amazing,” exclaimed Joel Embiid, who was limited to 25 minutes due to his recent return from a knee injury. Embiid finished the game with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.
The 76ers (33-25) look to continue their winning streak tonight on the road against the Milwaukee Bucks. However, they will be without both Embiid and Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf injury). Paul George, who sat out Thursday’s game, is expected to play, while Kelly Oubre will be reevaluated next week.
