New Delhi – December 6, 2025 – The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has stepped in to cap airfares after IndiGo cancelled over 400 flights from major airports across the country for the fifth consecutive day. The cancellations, impacting thousands of passengers, come a day after the airline secured temporary relaxations regarding flight duty and rest period norms for its cockpit crew.
The MoCA cited “unusually high airfares” as travellers scrambled to make alternative arrangements and invoked its regulatory powers to impose fare caps, similar to those used during the initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020. These caps will remain in effect until the situation stabilises, and any deviations from the prescribed norms will face immediate corrective action.
“An official directive has been issued to all airlines mandating strict adherence to the fare caps that have now been prescribed,” stated a press release from the Ministry.
The Ministry has also directed IndiGo to expedite all pending passenger refunds for cancelled or disrupted flights, mandating that the entire refund process be completed by 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
The cancellations are widespread, with reports indicating 124 flights cancelled at Bengaluru airport and 109 at Mumbai airport alone. The MoCA stated that the fare caps aim to prevent airlines from exploiting passengers in distress and to ensure that those with urgent travel needs, including senior citizens, students, and patients, are not subjected to financial hardship.
The Ministry will continue to monitor fare levels closely, working with airlines and online travel platforms to ensure compliance. This is a developing story and further updates will be provided as they become available.
