Annamalai University Lands ₹3.4 Crore Grant for Deep Ocean Research

CUDDALOR, Tamil Nadu – December 5, 2025 – Annamalai University’s Department of Advanced Study in Marine Biology has received a significant boost, securing ₹3.4 crore in funding from the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ Deep Ocean Mission. The grants will support three major research projects aimed at expanding our understanding of deep-sea ecosystems and harnessing their potential.

Dr. P. Murugesan, Associate Professor, has been awarded ₹1.75 crore to conduct a comprehensive taxonomic study of deep-sea polychaetes. His research will focus on identifying and documenting undiscovered species, creating a vital baseline of information for marine biologists.

Associate Professor M. Arumugam secured ₹85.00 lakh to develop a library of microbial metabolites derived from deep-sea organisms. This library aims to identify promising compounds with potential benefits for medicine and other fields.

Assistant Professor A. Gopalakrishnan received ₹80 lakh to investigate pathogenic and zoonotic viruses in deep-sea and coastal waters of the East Coast of India, including the Andaman Islands. The research will focus on identifying virulent strains affecting fish and shellfish populations.

“This funding represents a significant step forward for our research efforts,” said a university official. “It will allow us to drive impactful research and make meaningful contributions to scientific and technological advancements in marine biology.” The Deep Ocean Mission is a flagship research programme of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, aimed at promoting exploration and sustainable use of deep-sea resources.
