Widespread Internet Outage Turns Online Learning into a Snow Day in New Albany

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – A winter snowfall coupled with a widespread internet outage unexpectedly transformed a planned online instruction day into a classic snow day for students in Floyd County.

Floyd County Schools had initially canceled in-person classes due to the snow. However, the contingency plan for online learning was disrupted when a widespread internet outage struck the region. Christina Roberts, a local parent, found herself unable to connect her children to their online schoolwork, both at home and at the Floyd County Public Library.

Faced with the unexpected opportunity, families across New Albany embraced the snow day. Roberts and her sons took to the slopes for sledding, while others, like the Cooley family, celebrated their son Sammy’s second-ever snowfall.

Despite the freezing temperatures, families flocked to the riverfront hill, reveling in the powdery snow. Jordan Budwick, a transplant from upstate New York, even ventured out on his bicycle, finding the snowy landscape a peaceful and nostalgic escape.

While roads remained clear in downtown New Albany, the snow provided a welcome break and a chance for families to create lasting memories. For many, like the Cooleys, this snow day was a far more enjoyable experience than the previous winter storms.
