Frustration Boils Over: Green Bay Coach Doug Gottlieb Throws Chair After Late-Game Collapse

Green Bay, WI – Green Bay Phoenix head coach Doug Gottlieb couldn’t contain his frustration following a stunning 80-78 loss to Robert Morris on Wednesday. Cameras captured Gottlieb throwing a chair as he headed to the locker room after the Phoenix squandered a late 11-point lead.

The collapse began with under four minutes remaining, but the turning point came with just 35.7 seconds on the clock. A costly 10-second violation, called after Green Bay failed to advance the ball past midcourt, allowed Robert Morris to close the gap. The Colonials then hit a go-ahead three-pointer, and a missed free throw by Green Bay left the game tied. Nikolaos Chitikoudis sealed the victory for Robert Morris with a layup with just 2.4 seconds remaining.

“It was just embarrassing how we lost the game,” Gottlieb stated in a post-game interview, attributing the 10-second violation to a breakdown in communication.

Despite the frustrating loss, Gottlieb expressed encouragement regarding his team’s effort, defense, and execution throughout the game.

Gottlieb, a former basketball player and media personality, took over the Green Bay program prior to the 2024-25 season. While his first season resulted in a 4-28 record, the Phoenix have already matched that win total in their first ten games this season, signaling potential progress for the program.
