Spectacular ‘Cold Supermoon’ to Grace Night Skies Tonight
[City, State] – December 4, 2025 – Skywatchers are in for a treat tonight as the ‘Cold Supermoon,’ the final full moon of 2025, reaches its peak illumination. This celestial event, which officially occurs at 6:14 p.m. EST, promises a stunning visual display, rising in the east near dusk and appearing higher in the sky than any other full moon this year.
The Cold Moon gets its name from various Native American traditions, including the Mohawk, who recognized it as a reminder of the frigid winter ahead. Other names include the Frost Exploding Trees Moon (Cree) and Moon of the Popping Trees (Oglala)
As a supermoon, this full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth (perigee), making it appear approximately 10% larger and brighter than average. It’s the third in a series of four supermoons. While technically fullest on Thursday evening, the Cold Moon will also present a bright and full appearance on Friday, offering another opportunity for viewing, especially around moonrise.
This lunar event is particularly noteworthy as it occurs near the winter solstice (Dec. 21), when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky. Consequently, the full moon reaches its highest point, creating a beautiful contrast.
Don’t miss this opportunity to observe the year’s final supermoon!
