Fri Dec 05 09:00:00 UTC 2025: Sydney Harbour at Risk as Wastewater Pipe Cracks Amidst National Heatwave and Bushfire Crisis

Sydney, Australia – A cracked wastewater pipe threatens to spill sewage into Sydney Harbour, according to NSW water utility officials. The leak stems from a critical wastewater main 8 meters underground in Darling Harbour. A temporary solution is in place, diverting flow to Wentworth Park in Glebe, but the water utility says while the leak is controlled, there is a significant risk of the pipe failing. Twenty-four-hour works are in progress to resolve the issue.

The incident comes as New South Wales experiences its first heatwave of the summer, with temperatures soaring across the country. Other states affected by the heatwave include parts of the Northern Territory, Queensland, and Western Australia, with an extreme heatwave warning in WA’s Pilbara region.
