Fri Dec 05 15:30:50 UTC 2025: Kenyan Parliament Accuses British Troops of Abuse and Destruction
Nairobi, Kenya – A scathing parliamentary report has accused British soldiers training in Kenya of widespread human rights and environmental abuses over decades. The report, released Wednesday, details allegations of killings, sexual assault, neglect of children, and environmental damage caused by the British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK).
The investigation, prompted by years of complaints from local communities, found that BATUK’s actions had led to them being viewed as an “occupying force.” Accusations range from mishandling dangerous materials to the murder of a Kenyan woman, Agnes Wanjiru, in 2012, a case that has gained international attention.
The report found a “disturbing trend” of sexual misconduct and environmental damage, including a major fire in 2021, allegedly caused by BATUK, that destroyed thousands of acres of vegetation and killed livestock.
Kenyan lawmakers amended a defense agreement with the UK in April 2024 to allow local prosecution of British soldiers. The report recommends the extradition of a British national to Kenya for the ongoing trial of Wanjiru’s murder.
The British High Commission in Kenya expressed disappointment, claiming that BATUK was not adequately represented during the parliamentary hearings.
