Imran Khan Alive but Suffering “Mental Torture” in Jail, Claims Sister

Rawalpindi, Pakistan – Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is alive but enduring “mental torture” in Adiala Jail, according to his sister, Dr. Uzma Khanum, who was granted a brief 20-minute visit with him on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Dr. Khanum reported that while her brother is physically well, he is angered by the conditions of his confinement. She said he is kept locked in his cell for extended periods with limited interaction with others.

Khan reportedly blames General Asim Munir, currently the most powerful figure in Pakistan after allegedly consolidating military control and rewriting the constitution, for his imprisonment and harsh treatment.

Concerns over Khan’s well-being have been mounting following weeks of restricted family access and persistent rumors about his deteriorating health, fueled by social media speculation originating from Afghanistan, a nation currently embroiled in border disputes with Pakistan. Khan’s sons previously expressed their “greatest fear” regarding their father’s condition and sought proof of life after being denied direct contact, despite a court order. His sisters previously alleged assault while attempting to visit him.

Senator Khurram Zeeshan of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party alleged that the government is isolating Khan to pressure him into exile, fearing his continued popularity. The Shehbaz Sharif government has yet to publicly address these claims or provide any verifiable evidence of Khan’s current state.

Khan, the 72-year-old former cricket star, has been incarcerated since August 2023. Protests have erupted in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with supporters demanding his release and an end to the alleged mistreatment.
