Hong Kong, December 2, 2025 – Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee announced today the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry to investigate a devastating apartment fire that claimed the lives of 151 people last week. The commission, to be headed by a judge, will be tasked with uncovering the cause of the blaze, identifying those responsible, and providing recommendations to prevent future tragedies.

“We must uncover the truth, ensure that justice is served, let the deceased rest in peace and provide comfort to the living,” Lee stated during a press conference.

The fire, which engulfed the Wang Fuk Court complex, rapidly spread due to high winds and the alleged use of substandard materials in ongoing maintenance work. Authorities are focusing on highly flammable foam panels used to block windows and the use of substandard netting on scaffolding.
