Roadside Bomb Kills Three Pakistani Police Officers Near Afghan Border Amid Rising Tensions

KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA, Pakistan – A roadside bomb killed three Pakistani police officers and wounded two others in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border on Wednesday, officials said. The blast, attributed to an improvised explosive device, occurred a day after an attack claimed by a faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistan Taliban.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack, but Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has been quick to blame the TTP. Islamabad has long accused Afghanistan of harboring the TTP since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, a charge Kabul denies.

The attack underscores the escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Recent months have witnessed a surge in violence along the border, including deadly clashes in October, prompting accusations and counter-accusations of cross-border attacks and support for militant groups.

The attack comes as tensions simmer between the two nations, with Pakistan alleging that Afghanistan provides safe haven to the TTP, a claim denied by the Taliban. Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of providing the TTP with a safe haven since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021. The Taliban denies that its territory is used by the group.

The violence on Wednesday follows a Tuesday attack in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where gunmen killed a local administrator and two officers, wounding three others. A faction of the TTP claimed responsibility for that attack.

Amid the ongoing violence, reports emerged that Kabul and Islamabad held new peace talks in Saudi Arabia. The parties reportedly agreed to maintain the ceasefire, with one Afghan official suggesting that Kabul is open to further meetings in pursuit of a positive outcome.

While a ceasefire was initially signed in Doha in October, a second round of negotiations in Istanbul last month ended without a lasting agreement. Pakistan insists that Afghanistan take action against the TTP, while Kabul argues that it cannot guarantee the security of its neighbor.
