Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Parts of Western North Carolina

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) – Slick travel conditions are expected tonight and early Tuesday morning for several counties in western North Carolina as a storm system brings freezing rain to the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, effective from 7 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The advisory covers Avery, Buncombe, Henderson, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties, as well as the mountain regions of Burke, McDowell, Polk, and Rutherford Counties. Residents in these areas are urged to limit travel due to the potential for black ice, particularly at higher elevations.

“Motorists who must travel are advised to slow down and allow extra time to reach their destinations,” cautioned the National Weather Service.

While temperatures are expected to rise overnight, with most areas above freezing by 7 a.m. Tuesday, the risk of icy patches remains. Some areas in the northern mountains, like Burnsville and Mt. Mitchell, could see up to a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation.
