Tue Dec 02 00:32:00 UTC 2025: ## Madhya Pradesh Assembly Erupts in Heated Debate Over Child Deaths, Short Session Length

Bhopal, India – December 2, 2025 – The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly’s Winter Session commenced on Monday, December 1st, with a fierce exchange between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress MLAs. The conflict centered on recent tragedies involving the deaths of children in the state and concerns over the increasingly brief legislative sessions.

The initial condolence session, meant to honor figures like actor Dharmendra and victims of the Delhi explosion, quickly devolved into a shouting match after Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar criticized the government for omitting the recent cough syrup tragedy, which claimed the lives of 26 children, from the condolence list. He further slammed the government regarding the deaths of two children due to rat bites at an Indore hospital. Singhar accused the government of lacking humanity and demanded increased compensation for the affected families.

Cabinet Minister Vishwas Sarang countered, accusing Singhar of violating House rules by raising unlisted issues, triggering further turmoil. Prior to the session, Congress MLAs staged a protest, carrying dummy infants and adorning themselves with cough syrup bottles to highlight the tragedies.

Congress members also voiced concerns about the decreasing length of the Assembly sessions, alleging a deliberate attempt to undermine the role of legislators. Badnawar MLA Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat questioned the purpose of short sessions, emphasizing the importance of addressing pressing issues such as farmer protests and student concerns.

The four-day session, scheduled to conclude on December 5th, includes a holiday on December 3rd to commemorate the Bhopal gas tragedy’s 41st anniversary. Further debates are expected on issues such as compensation for farmers affected by excessive rainfall, price differences for soybean farmers, and alleged fertilizer shortages.
