Tue Dec 02 06:40:00 UTC 2025: Virgin Australia Launches Final Doha Route, Boosting Qatar Airways’ Access “Through the Back Door”

Melbourne, Australia – Virgin Australia has officially launched its fourth and final route to Doha, Qatar, commencing flights from Melbourne on December 1st. This new service completes Virgin’s network connecting Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney to the Middle Eastern hub, all initiated in June.

However, the expansion is not without its complexities. Due to existing bilateral air service agreements limiting Qatar Airways’ direct access to the Australian market, the Gulf carrier is leveraging Virgin Australia to increase its presence. Qatar Airways is utilizing unused Australian traffic rights by deploying its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and crew on these Virgin Australia-branded routes.

The Melbourne-Doha route covers 6,453 nautical miles (11,951 km) with a block time of approximately 14 hours and 15 minutes. The daily service is operated on a two-class, 354-seat 777-300ER.

The schedule is strategically timed to connect with Qatar Airways’ extensive network of flights arriving in Doha from Europe and the Middle East, effectively doubling capacity and feeding onward services to various destinations.

The launch of the Melbourne route coincided with the introduction of a new Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Canberra.

While Qatar Airways claims the Canberra extension is for regulatory purposes, it has been speculated that this setup allows Qatar Airways to operate its existing flights.

The new developments have reignited debates regarding competition in the Australian aviation market, particularly concerning long-haul routes and the role of international partnerships. Many believe that the increased competition will benefit customers, while others express concerns about the indirect means of expansion.
