Tue Dec 02 05:20:00 UTC 2025: ‘Smiling Friends’ Creators Talk Balancing Absurdity, Fan Theories, and Unlikely Cameos
LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) – Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel, the minds behind the Adult Swim cult favorite “Smiling Friends,” are riding high after the season three finale. The animated series, which follows Charlie and Pim as they spread positivity, has been renewed for two more seasons.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cusack and Hadel discussed the evolution of their characters, the sometimes-overzealous fan theories, and their approach to incorporating real-world elements without becoming overtly political.
“It’s baked into the show where we’ve hidden all these fun little things that we do want people to find,” Hadel explained. “But it’s almost like we’ve turned up people’s schizophrenia pattern recognition, where they’re now looking for something everywhere.” Despite occasional misinterpretations, the creators emphasize that “Smiling Friends” prioritizes humor and avoids taking sides on political issues.
This season featured a cameo from Brian O’Halloran of “Clerks” fame, a dream come true for the filmmakers who where influenced by Clerks. “I don’t think he knows what the f*** ‘Smiling Friends’ is,” Hadel quipped.
Looking ahead, Cusack and Hadel have already begun writing new episodes. While acknowledging the pressure to continue the show indefinitely, the creators are firm about not overstaying their welcome. “Even if we had a thousand ideas at the end of season five, we’re not going to go on long,” Hadel stated, citing The Beatles’ concise discography as inspiration for leaving the audience wanting more. They suggest that ending the show would leave room for new projects.
“We’ll see how we feel after four and five, and then Zach and I will get into the war room and decide what the next plan is,” Cusack added.
