I-70 Reopens After 45-Car Pileup Near Terre Haute, Indiana; Miraculously, No Major Injuries Reported
TERRE HAUTE, IN – Interstate 70 westbound was shut down for six hours on Saturday following a massive 45-car pileup just outside of Terre Haute, Indiana, near the Illinois border. Icy road conditions, a result of the severe winter weather gripping the Midwest, are believed to be the primary cause of the chain-reaction collision.
Despite the significant damage to numerous vehicles, Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Matt Ames reported that, remarkably, there were no major injuries.
The incident occurred amid widespread winter weather across the Midwest, with lake-effect snow burying parts of Ohio and Michigan, and Winter Storm Bellamy dumping close to a foot of snow in some areas of Iowa and Wisconsin. The timing was particularly dangerous as holiday travelers returned home after Thanksgiving.
Food writer Jed Portman, one of the drivers caught in the pileup, described the scene as chaotic. “We were near the back of the pileup, where it wasn’t nearly as bad,” he said. “The very front was so much worse. There were families miraculously climbing out of cars that had been decimated.” Portman was uninjured, but his car sustained damage.
Clean-up crews worked diligently for six hours to clear the wreckage and reopen the westbound lanes of I-70.
Authorities are urging drivers across the Midwest to exercise extreme caution as dangerous driving conditions persist. Officer Ames advised on Facebook, “If you don’t have to take any unnecessary trips, please stay home.” For those who must travel, officials strongly recommend reducing speed and increasing following distance.
