Thousands Rally in Caracas as US Military Action Looms Over Venezuela

Caracas, Venezuela – Thousands of Venezuelans rallied in Caracas on Monday in a show of support for President Nicolas Maduro, amidst escalating tensions and growing concerns over potential military intervention by the United States.

President Maduro addressed the crowd, reiterating his commitment to peace and sovereignty, while condemning what he called a US campaign of “psychological terrorism.” The rally coincided with reports of a US military buildup in the Caribbean, which Washington claims is an anti-drug trafficking operation, but Caracas views as a veiled attempt at regime change.

The US has reportedly amassed 15,000 troops in the region and deployed significant military assets, including an aircraft carrier. The US has also labelled the Cartel de los Soles, which it describes as a drug trafficking cartel led by Maduro, as a “terrorist” organisation.

Recent reports suggest that President Trump offered Maduro safe passage out of Venezuela during a phone call last month. However, negotiations reportedly broke down over Maduro’s demands for amnesty and the lifting of sanctions. Following the expiration of the offer, Trump declared Venezuelan airspace closed, further ratcheting up tensions.

Al Jazeera’s Teresa Bo, reporting from the Colombia-Venezuela border, noted growing fears among Venezuelans about a potential US military strike. Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government has been deploying military units across the country, particularly around Caracas, in anticipation of potential conflict.

Experts suggest that Venezuela’s military is no match for the US, leading to concerns that any conflict could devolve into irregular warfare and widespread chaos.

The US government does not recognize Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela, citing a flawed re-election in 2018.
