Lok Sabha to Debate ‘Vande Mataram’ Anniversary, Electoral Reforms After Agreement Reached

New Delhi, December 2, 2025 – The Lok Sabha is set to debate the 150th anniversary of India’s national song, ‘Vande Mataram,’ on Monday, December 8th, followed by a debate on electoral reforms on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 9th and 10th. The announcement came from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju after a productive all-party meeting and a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting chaired by Speaker Om Birla.

This agreement signals a possible breakthrough in the parliamentary impasse caused by the Opposition’s insistence on discussing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a process currently underway in 12 states and Union Territories.

“It has been decided to hold discussion in Lok Sabha on 150th Anniversary of National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ from 12 Noon on Monday, December 8 and discussion on Election Reforms from 12 noon on Tuesday, December 9,” Rijiju stated on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to initiate the debate on ‘Vande Mataram.’ Each debate has been allocated 10 hours of discussion time, with the possibility of extension should the House deem it necessary.

The Speaker’s meetings were crucial in resolving the deadlock. Initially, the government had resisted discussing the SIR, arguing it was an administrative matter for the Election Commission. However, after discussions, the government agreed to a broader debate on electoral reforms, which will now encompass the Opposition’s concerns regarding the SIR.

“The House will take up the debate on Vande Mataram and then on Tuesday and Wednesday, the House will debate electoral reforms, (with) opposition’s SIR discussion debate clubbed under electoral reforms,” stated Congress’ chief whip K. Suresh.

The Lok Sabha had been repeatedly adjourned due to Opposition protests regarding the SIR. This agreement promises to restore order and allow for substantive discussions on these important issues.
