Humboldt Bay Braces for King Tides, Seeks Citizen Scientists

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CA – Get your cameras ready! Humboldt County is preparing for the arrival of King Tides on Thursday and Friday, December 4th and 5th, 2025. These exceptionally high tides, predicted to reach over 9.85 feet in some areas, offer a preview of the potential impacts of sea-level rise on the region.

The California Coastal Commission is calling on local residents to participate in the California King Tides Project by photographing the high tides and submitting the images online. The project aims to create a visual record of current shoreline changes and identify areas vulnerable to flooding in the future.

“These King Tides give us a glimpse into what our coastlines might look like with rising sea levels,” said a spokesperson for the California Coastal Commission. “By documenting these extreme high tides, we can gain a better understanding of the challenges we face and work towards effective adaptation strategies.”

High tides are expected between 10:05 am and 10:50 am on Thursday, continuing through Friday, with unusually high tides persisting into Saturday morning.

Residents are urged to exercise caution when observing and photographing the King Tides. For those interested in a guided experience, Friends of the Arcata Marsh will host its annual King Tides tour on Friday, December 5th, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, meeting on South I Street at the first gravel parking lot in from Samoa Boulevard.

The California Coastal Commission is hosting a webinar on December 2nd to provide tips on how to safely and effectively document the King Tides. More information on the California King Tides Project, including tide charts and photo upload instructions, can be found on the commission’s website. Residents can also find resources and inspiration by browsing the King Tide photo map.
