Minor Earthquake Rattles Western Surry County
LOWGAP, NC – November 30, 2023 – A small earthquake was reported in western Surry County this morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor, measuring a magnitude of 1.6, struck approximately three miles southwest of Lowgap, North Carolina, at 7:11 a.m.
Lowgap, a small town with a population of around 200, is located in the western part of Surry County. As of 10:00 a.m. today, only two individuals reported feeling the earthquake. Authorities have confirmed that there are no reports of damage resulting from the event.
The USGS continues to monitor the area, but no further tremors are expected. This is a developing story, and WXII News will provide updates as they become available.
