Sun Nov 30 16:07:36 UTC 2025: Pope Leo XIV Advocates Two-State Solution, Begins Lebanon Visit Amid Regional Tensions
Beirut, Lebanon – Pope Leo XIV arrived in Lebanon Sunday, following a visit to Turkiye, where he reiterated the Vatican’s firm support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, calling it the “only solution” guaranteeing justice for both sides. His visit comes amid heightened regional tensions, with near-daily Israeli air strikes continuing in southern Lebanon.
During his flight from Ankara, the Pope confirmed he discussed the wars in Gaza and Ukraine with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, emphasizing Turkiye’s “important role to play” in resolving both conflicts. Regarding Gaza, Pope Leo acknowledged Israel’s current rejection of a Palestinian state but insisted it remains the most viable path towards a just and lasting resolution.
“We know that in this moment, Israel doesn’t accept this solution, but we see it as the only one that can offer a solution to the conflict that they are living in,” the Pope said. “We are also friends with Israel, and we try with both sides to be a mediating voice that can help bring them closer to a solution with justice for all.”
Upon arrival in Beirut, the Pope was greeted by enthusiastic crowds. He is scheduled to meet with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and deliver a speech to authorities and diplomats at the presidential palace. His itinerary also includes a mass in central Beirut, a visit to the site of the devastating 2020 port explosion, and a visit to a psychiatric hospital.
Lebanon’s diverse communities have welcomed the Pope’s visit, with religious leaders expressing hope that it will bring a “glimmer of hope” to the nation. Security has been significantly heightened, with army and internal security forces deployed along the Pope’s route. His convoy will pass through areas influenced by Hezbollah, which has urged the Pope to condemn “injustice and aggression” against Lebanon, referring to Israeli attacks.
