Sun Nov 30 17:30:00 UTC 2025: Verstappen Pounces as McLaren Strategy Blunder Sets Up Thrilling Abu Dhabi Showdown

Qatar, December 1, 2025 – Max Verstappen seized victory at the Qatar Grand Prix after a crucial strategy error by McLaren gifted the Red Bull driver the win. Oscar Piastri finished second, visibly frustrated after seeing a likely victory slip away, while championship leader Lando Norris could only manage fourth.

The turning point came during a Safety Car period triggered by a collision between Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly. While Verstappen pitted for fresh tires, the McLarens of Piastri and Norris stayed out. Due to strict tire regulations limiting stint lengths, McLaren’s decision ultimately forced them into a less advantageous strategy, requiring two pit stops compared to Verstappen’s one.

Despite Piastri’s strong pace, he couldn’t close the gap to Verstappen after his final stop. Norris, who needed a win to secure the championship early, finished fourth after Kimi Antonelli made a late mistake.

The result sets up a nail-biting title decider at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix next weekend, with Norris leading Verstappen by just 12 points and Piastri by 16. Verstappen’s unlikely title challenge has been resurrected after trailing significantly earlier in the season.

Carlos Sainz capitalized on McLaren’s error to claim a podium for Williams. Antonelli recovered to fifth ahead of teammate George Russell.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella admitted the team made the wrong call, explaining that they didn’t anticipate the entire field pitting during the Safety Car.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1, with coverage beginning Friday. Don’t miss the race, where the 2025 Formula 1 World Champion will be crowned.
