“Maxton Hall” Star Damian Hardung Reflects on Emotionally Taxing Season 2: “I Wouldn’t Want to Do That Again”

Los Angeles, CA – Damian Hardung, the actor who plays James Beaufort in the hit Prime Video series “Maxton Hall,” has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of filming the show’s recently released second season. In an interview with PEOPLE, Hardung revealed that while he felt “privileged” to delve into the depths of his character’s grief following the death of James’s mother, the experience was personally draining.

“I wouldn’t want to do that again,” Hardung said, referring to the intensity of filming the season, which sees James grappling with loss and navigating complex relationships. He explained that the script for season 2 was noticeably “bleaker” and more emotionally honest than the first, requiring him to access a deep well of sadness. “It felt like there were tears every scene,” he said.

Hardung admitted that embodying James’s emotional turmoil inevitably affected him personally. “It does drag you down to a certain extent, and you stay in that field definitely,” he confessed.

His co-star, Harriet Herbig-Matten, who plays Ruby Bell, found the experience less taxing, crediting her work with a coach for helping her separate her own emotions from Ruby’s. “I really had a good time,” Herbig-Matten told PEOPLE, despite acknowledging the season’s intensity.

Looking ahead to the already-greenlit season 3, Hardung expressed hope for a lighter tone. “They have to do season three much more funny,” he joked, suggesting a comedic shift for the series.

Season 2 of “Maxton Hall” is currently streaming on Prime Video.
