Trump Unleashes Thanksgiving Tirade Targeting Minnesota Leaders and Somali Community
MINNEAPOLIS – President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm of controversy on Thanksgiving with a series of inflammatory remarks posted on Truth Social. In the invective, Trump used a slur for people with intellectual disabilities to insult Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and also employed racially and religiously prejudiced language against U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar. He further claimed, without evidence, that Somali refugees are “completely taking over” Minnesota.
Governor Walz responded with a terse post on X, stating, “Release the MRI results,” seemingly mocking Trump’s recent claims of “perfect” MRI results from a medical checkup.
The attacks extended beyond rhetoric. On Thursday, Trump ordered a reexamination of green cards from Somalia and 18 other countries. Days earlier, he threatened to terminate temporary protected status for Somalis in Minnesota, alleging, again without evidence, that Somali gangs were terrorizing the state.
These actions and statements have drawn condemnation from Somali community leaders, Democratic lawmakers, and advocacy groups. The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations issued a statement Friday urging Trump and all political leaders to moderate their language. Minnesota has the largest Somali population in the United States, estimated at approximately 80,000.
Adding to the escalating situation, late Thursday night Trump announced plans to suspend immigration from all “Third World Countries” to allow the U.S. immigration system to “fully recover.” The President did not specify a timeline for the implementation of such a policy or which countries would be affected. CBS News has reached out to the White House for clarification on this matter.
This latest escalation in the Trump administration’s stance on immigration follows the recent shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., allegedly by an Afghan national.
