Musk Praises Indian Talent, Addresses H-1B Visa Concerns
Elon Musk, in a recent podcast appearance, lauded the significant contributions of talented individuals from India to the United States. He emphasized that American innovation has greatly benefitted from their expertise.
However, the tech mogul also addressed the controversial topic of the H-1B visa program. While acknowledging instances of misuse, particularly by outsourcing companies “gaming the system,” Musk cautioned against shutting down the program entirely, stating it would be “very bad.” He clarified that his companies actively seek the most skilled individuals globally, underscoring a persistent scarcity of talent.
Musk’s comments come amid growing concerns about increasing US visa restrictions and policy changes affecting the aspirations of many Indians seeking education, career opportunities, and a better quality of life in America. Former President Trump had previously suggested significant cost increases for H-1B applications and raised concerns about fraud and Americans losing jobs. However, Trump has also acknowledged the need to bring in global talent to address skill gaps, especially in industries like computer chip manufacturing. Data shows India is by far the greatest beneficiary of the H-1B visa.
Musk further commented on the importance of border control, criticizing the Biden administration’s policies, describing them as “a total free-for-all with no border controls”. He added that lack of control created a “negative selection effect”.
