Udupi Seeks Metro, National Recognition for Kambala, and Tech Hub Status in Proposal to PM Modi
MANGALURU, November 30, 2025 – Udupi district is pushing for significant infrastructure and development upgrades after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Sri Krishna Mutt on Friday, November 28th. A comprehensive proposal, presented by Paryaya Putthige Mutt seers Sugunendra Tirtha and Sushrendra Tirtha, outlines eight ambitious projects designed to transform the region.
Chief among the requests is the construction of a metro rail corridor connecting Udupi and Mangaluru, addressing the increasing congestion on the 55km coastal stretch. The Udupi district administration has reportedly offered to prepare an initial project report, urging the Prime Minister to include the project in national urban mobility programs.
The proposal also seeks national recognition for Kambala, the traditional buffalo race, promoting indigenous culture and boosting tourism. The Karnataka government recently recognized Kambala under the Sports Authority of Karnataka.
Udupi aims to establish itself as a major hub for technology and education, requesting the establishment of an IIT, IIM, and AIIMS. The AIIMS, in particular, would address the need for advanced healthcare services in Karnataka and North Kerala, focusing on oncology, cardiology, and trauma care. Furthermore, the proposal calls for an IT and AI Innovation Park, along with data security and cloud computing infrastructure, to strengthen India’s technological independence and create employment opportunities.
An international airport is also on the wish list, with 1,000 acres of land reportedly available and suitable for construction. Finally, the proposal seeks an international standard Port and Cruise Terminal, aiming to boost maritime trade, cruise tourism, and the blue economy.
The ambitious proposal reflects Udupi’s aspirations for comprehensive development, leveraging its unique cultural heritage and strategic location. The central government’s response to these proposals remains to be seen, but the initiative signals a clear intent to propel Udupi forward.
