Pakistan Suspends Military Action Against Afghanistan Following Qatari Mediation Attempt
Islamabad – November 30, 2025 – Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar revealed on Saturday that a planned military operation against Afghanistan was halted last month following a request from Qatar for mediation.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Dar expressed Pakistan’s growing concerns regarding the ongoing security situation along its border with Afghanistan. He stated that Qatar’s Foreign Ministry intervened just as Pakistan was preparing to take action against Afghanistan, prompting a pause for mediation efforts. However, these efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful, leaving Qatar reportedly “upset.”
Mr. Dar emphasized the need for the Afghan Taliban to address Pakistan’s security concerns, particularly the cross-border militancy that he claims has resulted in the deaths of 4,000 Pakistani officers and soldiers since the Taliban took power. While asserting Pakistan’s capability to address the issue, he stressed that a military incursion into Afghanistan was undesirable.
He also pointed to the support of the European Union for Pakistan’s position regarding Afghanistan and reiterated calls for Afghanistan to prevent its territory from being used for terrorist activities.
Beyond Afghanistan, Mr. Dar addressed Pakistan’s potential role in the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) in Gaza. While confirming Pakistan’s willingness to contribute troops for peacekeeping purposes, he clarified that Pakistan would not participate in any efforts to disarm Hamas. He emphasized that this responsibility lies with Palestinian law enforcement. The decision to participate in ISF will be made once the ISF mandate has been clarified.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have become increasingly strained due to persistent allegations from Pakistan that the Afghan Taliban are failing to prevent safe havens for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorists.
