Puthiyamputhur Garment Manufacturers Seek Dedicated Textile Market Despite New Park Project

THOOTHUKUDI, November 30, 2025 – Manufacturers in Puthiyamputhur, a village in Tamil Nadu renowned for its readymade garment industry, are expressing concerns over a recently announced mini textile park. While welcoming the initiative by Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, they argue that the location of the park in Muppulivetti village and its limited capacity of 24 shops are inadequate to meet the needs of the hundreds of small-scale garment producers in Puthiyamputhur.

Manufacturers have been advocating for a dedicated textile market in Puthiyamputhur for 20 years, emphasizing its potential to boost local businesses and compete with established traders from other regions. They propose a larger market with around 200 shops located within Puthiyamputhur, which is already recognized as a garment hub.

Concerns also include the small size of the proposed shops and a perceived lack of focus on the manufacturers’ immediate needs. Representatives highlight the need for marketing training to tap into export markets and believe a larger, well-located market would be a more effective way to empower local producers.

The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) has assured that the project will be expanded based on demand and operational assessments. However, manufacturers remain skeptical, fearing that the current plan will not sufficiently address their long-standing needs for a dedicated space to showcase and sell their products.
