Delhi Police File FIR Against Gandhis in National Herald Case, Congress Denounces “Political Vendetta”
New Delhi – In a significant development in the long-running National Herald case, the Delhi Police have filed an FIR against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, along with several other individuals and entities. The FIR, based on a complaint lodged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), alleges serious financial impropriety, including criminal conspiracy, dishonest misappropriation of property, criminal breach of trust, and cheating.
The ED accuses the Gandhis of abusing their positions to benefit personally through the Young Indian (YI) company. The agency alleges that YI acquired properties belonging to the Associated Journals Ltd. (AJL), publisher of the National Herald newspaper, worth ₹2,000 crore for a mere ₹50 lakh, significantly undervaluing the assets.
The FIR names several other individuals, including Congress leaders Suman Dubey and Sam Pitroda, as well as entities like Young Indian, Dotex Merchandise Ltd, and AJL. The case stems from a private complaint filed in 2014 alleging irregularities in the National Herald’s affairs.
The Congress party has vehemently condemned the FIR, calling it a “completely bogus case” and an act of political vendetta by the ruling Modi-Shah administration. In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh stated, “The Modi-Shah duo is continuing with its mischievous politics of harassment, intimidation, and vendetta against the top leadership of the INC.” He added that justice would ultimately prevail.
The ED used its powers under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to trigger the police investigation. The FIR is expected to bolster the ED’s ongoing money laundering investigation and its charge sheet already filed in a Delhi court. The court is scheduled to take cognisance of the charge sheet on December 16.
The National Herald case has been a source of political contention for several years. The Gandhis have previously been questioned by the ED in connection with the case. This latest development is sure to further escalate tensions between the Congress party and the ruling BJP.
