Sun Nov 30 01:00:00 UTC 2025: Headline: Cyclone ‘Ditwa’ Threatens Andhra Pradesh Farmers Already Grappling with Losses
Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh: Farmers in Andhra Pradesh are facing renewed distress as Cyclone ‘Ditwa’ approaches, just as they are recovering from the damage caused by Cyclone ‘Montha’. The impending storm threatens to exacerbate existing challenges, including unseasonal rains, delayed harvest and sale process and lack of remunerative price for their produce.
‘Ditwa’ is expected to make landfall near Chennai on Sunday night and subsequently weaken into a depression as it enters Andhra Pradesh, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to the state. Farmers are worried about damage to standing crops, particularly paddy, which is nearing harvest.
The government’s support in the sale process has been lacking. Farmers are forced to sell their crops to private traders at prices far below the minimum support price (MSP), citing high moisture content in the grains. Lack of adequate storage facilities and transportation further compound their problems. Farmers are appealing for the government to intervene and ensure they receive fair prices for their produce and for required assistance.
The state government has directed district collectors to take precautionary measures and evacuate people to relief camps if necessary. The fisheries department has advised fishermen against venturing into the sea.
