Mon Nov 24 22:20:00 UTC 2025: ## McSteamy’s Return: Eric Dane Tackles ALS Diagnosis On-Screen in “Brilliant Minds”
HOLLYWOOD, CA – Eric Dane, best known as “McSteamy” from his six seasons on “Grey’s Anatomy,” is making a poignant return to television, taking on a role that mirrors his own personal battle. The actor, who revealed his ALS diagnosis earlier this year, will guest star on the November 24th episode of NBC’s medical drama “Brilliant Minds” as Matthew, a firefighter living with the same debilitating disease.
Dane’s character, Matthew, grapples with the challenges of ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and the impact it has on his relationships. He struggles with accepting help and fears becoming a burden to his ex-wife and daughter, choosing to keep his diagnosis a secret.
The episode was conceived after Dane’s team reached out to “Brilliant Minds” creator Michael Grassi, who was also navigating a family health crisis at the time. Their discussions led to a storyline exploring the complexities of navigating a difficult diagnosis and the emotional toll it takes on families.
“There’s no rule book. There’s no right way or wrong way to do it,” Grassi told USA TODAY, highlighting the raw and honest portrayal of Matthew’s journey.
The experience of filming the episode was profoundly moving for the cast and crew. One particular scene, where Matthew records a message about asking for help, resonated deeply, resulting in a rare 10-minute standing ovation for Dane.
“I have never seen this happen in my entire career, but he essentially got a 10-minute standing ovation after shooting that scene, because it was so beautiful and so honest and so real,” Grassi said.
Beyond the screen, Dane is using his platform to raise awareness about ALS. He recently met with Congressman Eric Swalwell to discuss the disease and vowed to fight for a cure.
“I want to see [my daughters] graduate college, get married, maybe even have grandkids. I want to be there for all that so I’m going to fight until the last breath on this one,” Dane said in a TikTok video shared by Swalwell.
Tune in to NBC’s “Brilliant Minds” on November 24th at 10 ET/PT to witness Eric Dane’s powerful performance and the show’s sensitive portrayal of living with ALS.
