No. 22 Auburn Tigers Face Grueling Test at Players Era Festival in Las Vegas

Auburn, AL – The No. 22 Auburn Tigers men’s basketball team is set to face a challenging schedule at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas this week, seeking to build momentum before entering SEC play. Fresh off a narrow defeat to top-ranked Houston, the Tigers, led by Coach Steven Pearl, will play a guaranteed two games against Oregon and No. 7 Michigan, followed by a third game against a tournament-caliber opponent determined by bracket seeding.

The Tigers kick off the tournament against Oregon, a team with significant size and rebounding ability. Key players to watch for the Ducks include 7-footer Nate Bittle and guard Jackson Shelstad, who averaged 18.3 points per game last season. Auburn will need to focus on boxing out to prevent second-chance points, a lesson learned from their recent game against Houston.

On Tuesday, Auburn will face a rematch of last season’s Sweet Sixteen game against a revamped Michigan team. The Wolverines have added significant talent through transfers, including forward Yaxel Lendeborg and point guard Elliot Cadeau.

The health of Auburn’s leading scorer, Keyshawn Hall, is a concern after he suffered an ankle and foot sprain in the Houston game. His availability for the tournament is uncertain, and the team will proceed cautiously with his recovery.

Coach Pearl emphasized the importance of the tournament as a learning experience for the team and staff, highlighting the need for comprehensive preparation beyond just scouting reports.

“These are fun events — you learn a lot about your team, and you learn a lot about your staff,” Pearl said. “It’s so much more than just scouting reports and watching film. … People think you go out there and play three games. It’s a damn production. You need all hands on deck.”

Auburn’s final game of the tournament will depend on the results of their first two games. The Tigers aim to maintain a high ranking in the event’s metrics to secure a favorable matchup on Wednesday.
