THOOTHUKUDI, November 24, 2025 – Life has been thrown into disarray across several southern districts of Tamil Nadu as the Northeast monsoon unleashes heavy rainfall, triggering widespread flooding. Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, and Kanniyakumari are bearing the brunt of the downpour, with Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi experiencing the most significant disruption.
Tirunelveli district recorded an average rainfall of 93.96 mm in the past 24 hours, with some areas exceeding 200 mm. In Thoothukudi, the average rainfall was 61.17 mm, with several locations recording near 100 mm. Waterlogging is prevalent in residential areas of both districts, prompting authorities to deploy pumping stations to alleviate the flooding. The Thamirabarani river is swollen as water is released from the Marudhur and Srivaikuntam anicuts.
Tenkasi district has received an average of 57.55 mm of rainfall, causing water levels in major dams to rise. While Kanniyakumari has experienced lighter rainfall of 16.85 mm, dam levels there are also being closely monitored.
