Chennai Metro Share-Auto Service Faces Commuter Complaints Despite Expansion Plans

Chennai, November 24, 2025 – Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL)’s share-auto service, designed to provide last-mile connectivity between Pallavaram parking and the Tirusulam Metro station (Chennai Airport), is facing criticism from commuters. Despite easing access to the Metro for hundreds of daily passengers from areas like Tambaram and Selaiyur, concerns over overcrowding, a lack of queue regulation, and a longer-than-necessary route are being voiced.

Commuters report significant crowding, especially during peak hours at the Tirusulam station, with a lack of organized queues leading to disorderly boarding. Women commuters have also expressed discomfort with the cramped seating. The current route, which detours via Pallavaram Shandy Road, adds extra travel time due to highway authority recommendations regarding narrow entrance.

While CMRL plans to increase the share-auto fleet from four to six vehicles shortly and introduce volunteer queue management at Tirusulam by the end of January, officials have ruled out larger “maxi-cab” style vehicles. They argue that the smaller share-autos offer better maneuverability on narrow roads, preventing traffic delays.

“The present autos are about three metres long, allowing faster movement and easier turns on the narrow stretches. Maxi-cabs are nearly five metres long and may delay operations, which would not be in commuters’ interest,” said a CMRL official.

Some commuters feel a more substantial upgrade is needed, contrasting the comfort of the Metro with the current shuttle experience. Despite these issues, commuters remain appreciative of the overall Metro service and hope the operational problems will be resolved to improve the overall transit experience.
