Bernie Kosar Receives Liver Transplant, “Feeling Good” After Surgery
CLEVELAND – Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar underwent a successful liver transplant on Monday, after being on the waiting list for over a year. The 61-year-old Kosar, a Cleveland icon, shared a video message on social media expressing his positive outlook. “Hey, I’m out and I’m feeling good. Just ready to enjoy the rest of the week and the rest of our lives,” Kosar said.
Kosar publicly revealed last year that he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease. He had been experiencing liver-related issues for years prior to receiving a cirrhosis diagnosis in late 2023, eventually landing him on the transplant list last July. A previous transplant attempt last weekend was unfortunately delayed due to an infection in the donor organ. Prior to the transplant, he underwent five procedures in the past week to stop internal bleeding.
Kosar led the University of Miami to a national championship in 1983 before being drafted by his hometown Browns in 1985. During his tenure in Cleveland (1985-1993), Kosar led the team to three AFC Championship games. He ranks third in Browns history with 21,904 passing yards. After leaving the Browns, Kosar briefly played for the Dallas Cowboys, winning a Super Bowl ring in 1993, and later played for the Miami Dolphins from 1994-96.
The Browns honored Kosar with a tribute video during Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski expressed his admiration for Kosar. “Bernie’s my guy…he has just been such a supportive person of me, so kind to my family. He’s a special person. He’s a special Cleveland Brown, and we are all rooting for him.”
