Bernie Kosar “Doing Great” After Liver Transplant, Expresses Gratitude to Browns Ownership and Fans
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar is recovering well after undergoing a successful liver transplant on Monday at University Hospitals. In a phone call Tuesday, a strong and optimistic Kosar reported feeling better than he has in years despite battling early dementia, Parkinson’s, and a recent life-threatening bleeding episode that preceded the surgery.
“The doctors are amazed,” Kosar stated. “They can’t believe I’m doing this good.”
Prior to the transplant, Kosar faced a serious health scare, suffering from major bleeding that threatened his ability to undergo the procedure. However, after multiple procedures, the bleeding stopped, paving the way for the transplant.
Kosar expressed immense gratitude to the medical staff at University Hospitals, the fans who have supported him throughout his career, and especially to Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, along with their son-in-law JW Johnson. “The Browns have paid my insurance all these years,” he revealed. “My medical bills have been millions and millions… they have been there for me. I’m telling you, I would not be alive without them.”
Kosar, who played for the Browns from 1985-93 and led them to the playoffs five times, also credited his faith and the prayers of supporters for his recovery. “I felt God wasn’t done with me yet,” he said.
Looking ahead, Kosar hopes to use his experience to help others heal. At 61 years old, Kosar emphasized, “This is the first day of the rest of my life.”
