Sat Nov 22 15:23:10 UTC 2025: Trump Sets Deadline for Ukraine to Accept Peace Plan, Sparks Debate
Geneva, Switzerland – Tensions are high as Ukrainian and US officials prepare to meet in Switzerland on Sunday to discuss a controversial US-proposed 28-point plan to end the war with Russia. US President Donald Trump has given Ukraine until Thursday to approve the plan, which reportedly includes territorial concessions, a reduction in the size of the Ukrainian army, and a pledge to remain outside of NATO.
The proposal has ignited fierce debate among Ukraine’s allies. While some see it as a basis for negotiation, others express serious concerns about the plan’s potential impact on Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. Key European leaders, along with Canada and Japan, issued a joint statement emphasizing that borders cannot be changed by force and voicing concerns about limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces.
“Wars cannot be ended by major powers over the heads of the countries affected,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated, underscoring the need for Ukraine’s “unconditional consent.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the upcoming talks on X, stating that his representatives “know how to defend Ukraine’s national interests.” The Ukrainian team will be led by top aide Andriy Yermak and will also include representatives of the Russian Federation. However, there has been no official confirmation from Russia regarding their participation.
Despite the diplomatic efforts, fighting continues on the ground. Russia claims to have made advances in eastern Ukraine, “liberating” the settlement of Zvanivka in the Donetsk region and inflicting “significant losses” on Ukrainian forces. Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down 89 out of 104 Russian drones launched overnight, but also reported casualties from ongoing air attacks.
The clock is ticking as Ukraine and its allies grapple with Trump’s deadline and the complex implications of the proposed peace plan. The outcome of the upcoming talks in Switzerland could have profound consequences for the future of Ukraine and the broader geopolitical landscape.
