MIAMI, FL – The FBI is investigating the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner, who was found dead on the Carnival Horizon cruise ship earlier this month. A source briefed on the investigation told ABC News that preliminary findings suggest Kepner died from asphyxiation caused by a bar hold, an arm across the neck. Investigators also found two bruises on her neck.

Kepner, a cheerleader from Titusville, Florida, was discovered on November 8th, reportedly hidden under a bed wrapped in a blanket and covered with life vests.

While the FBI has declined to comment directly, citing the ongoing investigation, the source indicated that initial information shows no signs of sexual assault and no apparent presence of drugs or alcohol in Kepner’s system. Official autopsy and toxicology reports are pending to confirm these details.

A court filing related to an unrelated family court matter involving Kepner’s stepmother, Shauntel Hudson, suggests Kepner’s stepsibling may face charges in connection with the death. Hudson, who was on the cruise with Kepner, her father, and her children, requested a delay in a custody hearing, stating that one of her minor children could be facing criminal charges.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office also declined to comment on the case. The FBI continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kepner’s death. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
