Erode Residents Demand Retrieval of Encroached Temple Land After Court Ruling
Erode, Tamil Nadu – November 21, 2025 – Members of the Sri Periya Mariamman Kovil Land Retrieval Movement petitioned District Collector S. Kandasamy today, urging immediate action to reclaim 12.66 acres of temple land in Erode. The land, valued at hundreds of crores, was declared to belong to the State government by the Madras High Court in December 2022.
The High Court ruling, which also cleared the way for the construction of an 80-foot road, was recently upheld when an appeal by the Church of South India Trust Association, deemed to have encroached upon the land, was dismissed on Thursday.
Led by president E.R.M. Chandrasekar, the movement is pressing the district administration to promptly take possession of the land and initiate the long-awaited construction of the road, connecting Meenatchi Sundaranar Road and Railway Station Road. Residents believe the new road will significantly improve local infrastructure and accessibility.
