Indian HAL Tejas Crashes at Dubai Air Show, Pilot Fatally Injured

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An Indian Air Force pilot died Friday after their HAL Tejas combat aircraft crashed during a demonstration flight at the Dubai Air Show. The incident occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. local time at Al Maktoum International Airport within Dubai World Central.

The HAL Tejas, an Indian-made combat aircraft, was performing a demonstration for spectators when it appeared to lose control and crashed within the airfield grounds. The Indian Air Force confirmed the crash and the pilot’s fatal injuries in a statement, expressing deep regret and pledging support to the family. An inquiry has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.

Witnesses reported seeing black smoke rising from the crash site as emergency services responded. The Dubai Media Office confirmed the rapid response of firefighting and emergency teams.

The Dubai Air Show, a biennial event, was hosting its final day when the crash occurred. India’s Press Information Bureau had previously refuted social media claims of a technical issue with the Tejas aircraft earlier in the week. It remains unclear if the aircraft involved in the crash was the same one referenced in the earlier reports.
