Ganja and Cigarettes Smuggling Attempts Foiled at Shivamogga Central Prison
Shivamogga, Karnataka – November 21, 2025 – The Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) successfully thwarted two separate attempts to smuggle contraband into the Central Prison in Shivamogga, located in Sogane. The incidents occurred on November 19th and 20th, prompting police investigation.
On November 20th, Sathvik, a 25-year-old prison staff member, was apprehended during a routine security check. KSISF Inspector Jagadish and PSI Prabhu S. discovered approximately 170 grams of ganja (marijuana) concealed in his innerwear, wrapped in gum tape. Sathvik allegedly intended to supply the ganja to inmates. He was arrested and booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
The incident marks the second time a government employee has been implicated in illegal activities within the prison in recent months. In October, a head constable was suspended for providing cell phones to inmates.
Earlier, on November 19th, KSISF personnel discovered 123 grams of ganja and 40 cigarettes hidden within banana bunches intended for the prison canteen. An autorickshaw driver had delivered the bananas but left before the contraband was discovered. The banned items were carefully concealed inside the stems of the banana bunches. Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible for supplying the tainted fruit.
P. Ranganath, Chief Superintendent of the prison, filed complaints with the Shivamogga Police, leading to the opening of two separate cases. He emphasized the rigorous security measures in place, stating that all personnel, including himself, undergo thorough checks.
The Central Prison, designed for a capacity of 500 inmates, currently houses 786 individuals. The KSISF’s vigilance has been crucial in preventing the flow of illicit substances into the facility.
