Leopard Attack Claims Life of 5-Year-Old Girl in Karnataka
Shivamogga, India – November 21, 2025 – A five-year-old girl, Sanvi, tragically lost her life after being attacked and carried away by a leopard in Mudre village, Tarikere taluk, Chikkamagaluru district on November 20th. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. while Sanvi was playing near a shed on an arecanut farm where her family was residing.
Her parents, Basavaraj and Renuka, who had traveled over 350 kilometers from Kammatgiri in Bagalkot district seeking employment, were left devastated. Basavaraj witnessed the attack and attempted to rescue his daughter but was unsuccessful. Sanvi’s body was later found approximately one kilometer from the shed.
The family had been hired to look after the farm, owned by a Bengaluru resident, Ramachandrappa. The shed provided for their stay lacked adequate protection from wildlife, being situated near Navilugudda, an area known for leopard sightings.
Tarikere MLA G.H. Srinivas and Forest Department officials visited the grieving family, offering condolences and a compensation cheque of ₹20 lakh. Arrangements were made to transport Sanvi’s body to her native village in Bagalkot for her final rites following a post-mortem examination.
B.M. Ravindra Kumar, Deputy Conservator of Forests of Bhadravathi division, stated that a combing operation has been launched to locate the leopard, utilizing pug marks. Cages have also been strategically placed in the area in an attempt to capture the animal. “This is the first incident where a leopard killed a human being. We are taking measures to capture the animal,” Kumar confirmed.
The incident has sparked concerns among local communities, prompting calls for increased measures to protect vulnerable populations from wildlife encounters.
