Fri Nov 21 03:50:00 UTC 2025: Texans Overcome Dismal Start, Now Eye Playoff Spot

HOUSTON – After a disastrous 0-3 start, the Houston Texans have clawed their way back into playoff contention, currently sitting at 5-5. A crucial Week 11 victory over the Tennessee Titans has propelled them into the conversation, with a 26% chance to make the playoffs, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index. That number could jump to 37% with a win over the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.

The Texans’ turnaround has been fueled by a resurgent defense, which has become one of the league’s stingiest, allowing the fewest points per game (16.3) and yards (258.1). This defensive prowess has helped them win five of their last seven games.

Despite the positive momentum, the Texans face a significant challenge this week against the formidable Buffalo Bills (7-3), a team Coach DeMeco Ryans described as a perennial contender. Houston will also be without starting quarterback C.J. Stroud for the third consecutive game due to a concussion, though he is expected to return in Week 13 against the Colts.

“All that stuff [the standings], it doesn’t matter,” said Ryans, emphasizing the team’s focus on playing hard regardless of the circumstances.

Backup quarterback Davis Mills has stepped up admirably in Stroud’s absence, leading the team to two wins and scoring 45 points in the process. However, the Texans’ record against winning teams is a concerning 2-5, with four of their seven remaining opponents currently above .500.

The Texans will need another strong defensive performance to overcome Josh Allen, a MVP candidate, and a tough Bills team to further solidify their playoff hopes. A victory would be a significant step in defying historical odds, as only a small percentage of teams with a similar record have made the playoffs in the Super Bowl era.
