Earthquake Rocks Bangladesh, Leaving at Least Three Dead and Several Injured

Dhaka, Bangladesh – A powerful earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday morning, killing at least three people and injuring several others. The magnitude 5.5 earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), hit at 10:38 am local time near the city of Narsingdi, approximately 33 kilometers (16 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.

The tremor, felt strongly in Dhaka and as far away as Kolkata, India, sent panicked residents fleeing their homes and offices. Witnesses in Dhaka reported buildings swaying and people weeping in the streets. “I’ve never felt an earthquake like this before,” said one Dhaka resident. “I was sleeping and all of a sudden, I felt the whole building shaking.”

Health officials confirmed that three people have died, including a medical student. The USGS warned of potentially significant casualties and damage in the wake of the quake. The shaking lasted for approximately 26 seconds, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, which recorded the magnitude as 5.7 and placed the epicenter in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi district.

While strong tremors were felt in Kolkata, over 325 kilometers from the epicenter, there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage in India. Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected.
